At Jovani, we totally believe that shopping for prom and homecoming dresses is serious business. As one does with any crucial undertaking, it’s important to have at least some plan in mind when you embark on your dress shopping. Most young women have some basic ideas of what they’d like their ideal prom dress to look like. Some want something relaxed and bohemian, while others want to look like they’re on their way not to prom, but to the Academy Awards!

One of the biggest decisions you have to make when you’re shopping for a prom dress is deciding between a long or a short dress. While some girls have an obvious preference for one or the other, others find themselves on the fence. To help you figure out which look is right for you, here are the pros and cons of short and long prom dresses.

Short Prom Dress Pro: Dancing is a cinch!

Sure, long gowns have a definite elegance about them, but when you’re trying to let loose on the dance floor, they can be kind of a pain. However, this isn’t a problem in a short dress. A short prom dress definitely makes dancing a whole lot easier.

Short Dress Con: Make sure your parents are okay with your dress length.

It’s easy to remain modest in a long dress, but some short dresses can offer a bit too much in the eyes of some parents. Before you commit to a short dress, be sure to get your parents’ approval. The last thing you want is for prom night to arrive, only for you to realize that Dad’s not letting you out of the house in a dress that short.

Long Dress Pro: It’s a classic.

Short formal gowns are actually relatively recent arrivals in the fashion world. We didn’t start seeing a lot of them until the 1980s, when girls started favoring club-inspired prom looks over the more debutante-esque gowns that their mothers wore. However, if you prefer the classic and the retro to the modern and edgy, then long prom dresses are definitely the way to go.

Long Dress Con: You might need an alteration to your hemline.

If every girl on the planet was the same height, it would definitely make dressmakers’ jobs a lot easier! Unfortunately for our industry, we all come in varying shapes and sizes. If you’re going to buy a long dress, make sure you allow enough time to have the hemline altered should it be too long or short.

Short Prom Dress Pro: It’s the easiest way to stand out.

Although short styles have become more popular over the past couple of decades, long still reigns supreme. So, if you’re the kind of girl who prefers to turn heads instead of merely blending into the crowd, then short is definitely the way to go. For a rock and roll-inspired look, try a metallic short dress paired with a daring pair of stiletto boots.

Long Prom Dress Pro: You can’t improve on a classic!

If your heart is set on a long prom dress, we don’t blame you. This is a classic, elegant look that never goes out of style. For true retro glamour, try a long gown in a classic hue like red or black. Draw inspiration from the countless Hollywood icons who have worn similar looks to award shows.

No matter what dress length you choose, what matters is that you wear your prom dress with confidence. Have fun with your dress hunt and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone if a certain dress catches your eyes.
